Welcome to the Western Cape Wineries - a kiwi's opinion blog

I originally set up this blog to help foreigners have an enjoyable experience when visiting the western cape wineries in South Africa.

I realised that it is very difficult for a tourist to choose where to go and which wineries to visit, when you have 600+ wine producers to choose from.

When I first moved to SA December 2010, my palate struggled to adjust to SA wine, b
ut after living here for a while and after visiting over 100+ wine estates, I have found many wines which I really like and can highly recommend.

Admittingly, when you come from another country it is hard not to compare the wine in SA to what you are used to back home. However, once you realise they are not the same (they have their own characteristics due to the different soil, climate etc) and appreciate their wines for being SA wines, it will improve your opinion and experience of the wines immediately.

If you are staying in SA for a while, don't dispair, your palate will change, and you will soon find yourself liking SA wine over your home countries wine!!

I hope my blog will help wine lovers have an enjoyable wine experience while in SA.

Please note: I am not a wine connoisseur. The comments I write about the wine is mostly for my own benefit of having them on record.

Dieu Donne

We took our European friends to Dieu Donne for lunch and it was the best choice ever. I saw a photo of this winery in a book I was given for Christmas "Franchhoek Food". It was due to the amazing view from this restaurant in the photo that I decided to try this winery for our lunch. Despite the fact we knew there wouldn't be a view! hehe.

The ambience in this restaurant was fantastic; there was a fireplace going, brick walls, the restaurant was full, the service was great and the food was lovely. It was the perfect lunch for a fantastic catch up with friends.

I took a chance taking them here not having tried it before, but I was so happy with the restaurant, I can't wait to go back again!! We all shared the following platter, had another two courses each, drank wine and beer all for R1300 for the four of us. I felt this was very reasonable!!

The staff bent over backwards to make our lunch as special as it was. We unfortunately missed a wine tasting at Dieu Donne but the waiters were so kind to allow us a try of some of their wine. 110% to the service!!

Be sure to eat at this restaurant!! I will be returning for another lunch and to try the rest of the wine!!!

Moreson

We took our friends from Europe here on a rainy Sunday. It was a very nice wine tasting experience and we all enjoyed the wine. It was a great start to the wine tasting in Franschhoek.

Moreson was a very nice winery, they have a restaurant, orchid display and a wine tasting room.

The guy serving us was very friendly, informative and was very welcoming.

We enjoyed the wine and were surprised the tasting was free. We all bought some wine and drank some that same evening. It was very nice!!

The Mata Mata 2010 (R145) was a little dry, had medium body, nice smell, I liked this wine. The Premium Chardonnay 2011 (R145) had a nice smell, was smooth and balanced and had nice body. The Sauvignon Blanc 2012 (R75) was very nice, had tropical fruity flavours with a grassy finish to it and a nice smell also. The Syrah (R150) was light, had a great smell, nice flavour and was a little dry, I also liked this wine. The Solitaire Blanc de Blancs N/V (R99) was very nice, it was biscuity and a little dry. My favourites: Solitaire Blanc de Blanc MCC, Mata Mata, Sauvignon Blanc and the Syrah.

I recommend visiting this winery. It has a nice vibe, great service and lovely wine!!

Hillcrest ten year celebration

Hillcrest was very kind to invite my boyfriend and I to their ten year celebration.

It was in a marquee in the quary, I always love this venue for their events.

We were there to celebrate Graham's ten years wine making at Hillcrest.

The venue was nicely decorated for the evening. There were heaps of really delicious canapes!!

The wine was very nice, we tried four Sauvignon Blancs. Sauvignon Blanc 2011 R60 a bottle, was nicely balanced, slightly grassy, soft, I liked it. The Sauvignon Blanc 2012 R60 a bottle, was green, fresh, perfect on a hot day, and it has very strong flavours.  The Celebration Sauvignon Blanc 2012 was R90 a bottle, there is a limited amount of this wine for sale. Last of all was the Relief Sauvignon Blanc 2012. I liked the lable on this bottle. It shows a 360 degree view from the point where the Relief Sauvignon Blanc grapes come from, its pretty cool I think. This was very nice, balanced and had good flavour, it sells for R120 a bottle.

Congratulations to Graham for a successful ten years at Hillcrest. Thanks again for inviting us to share in this celebration with you.
